What To Expect
Full day private tour from Rome Orvieto and Todi
Your excursion will begin directly at your accommodation in Rome and after a little over an hour reach the beautiful city of Orvieto. The site of Orvieto is among the most dramatic in Europe, rising above the almost vertical faces of tuff cliffs that are completed by defensive walls built of the same stone called Tufa. The ancient city has been populated since Etruscan times and was a major center of the Etruscan civilization. Today much of what you see if from the middle ages including the magnificent Duomo. The building was constructed under the orders of Pope Urban IV to commemorate and provide a suitable home for the Corporal of Bolsena, a miracle which is said to have occurred in 1263 in the nearby town of Bolsena, when a traveling priest who had doubts about the truth of transubstantiation found that his Host was bleeding so much that it stained the altar cloth. The cloth is now stored in the Chapel of the Corporal inside the cathedral.
Situated in a position dominating the town of Orvieto which sits perched on a volcanic plug, the cathedral’s façade is a classic piece of religious construction, containing elements of design from the 14th to the 20th century, with a large rose window, golden mosaics and three huge bronze doors, while inside resides two frescoed chapels decorated by some of the best Italian painters of the period with images of Judgment Day. The Gothic façade of the Orvieto Cathedral is one of the great masterpieces of the Late Middle Ages.
The city of Orvieto has always been well-known for its local crafts such as ceramics, lace making and wood carving. Quaint stores and workshops line the small streets in the center making for excellent shopping opportunities. There are also several very good restaurants in this area. Ask your driver for recommendations!
Only a short drive from Orvieto we will visit another Umbrian hill town - Todi. History tells us that Todi was built by the Etruscans between the III and I centuries BC. In the first century it became a Roman Comune and from this period you can see the cisterns below the main square, although much of what you see today is from the Middle Ages. Todi is a town to explore on foot. Start your visit in the Piazza del Popolo, this beautiful Medieval square with its important buildings from this period. Nearby is the Duomo. The cathedral in Todi, most probably constructed over a pagan temple, dates from the XI century and is consecrated to "Santa Maria Annunziata". The façade dates from the XVI century and it is in Lombard style. On the portal there is a magnificent rose window. The inside is in the shape of a Latin cross. Under the rose window you can see the grandiose "Last Judgment" by Ferraù from Faenza.
