High above the valley, the town was built on an underground tunnels system (over 1200!) of volcanic rock. Etruscan origins of the city were traced back to the 19th century BC. From 236 BC the Romans took it over and called it Urbs Vetus, from which ‘Orvieto’ derives.
Take the 248 stairs down to reach the bottom of this historical well. Built during the 1500s on orders of Pope Clement VII who feared the water supply would be insufficient in case of a siege, the well is about 53 meters (174 ft) deep, surrounded by 72 windows!
Two access stairs allowed mules to independently downward and upward with their vessels. An inscription in Latin mentions ‘What nature stinted for provision, industry has supplied‘.

Meeting instructions:
– Airport: your driver will be waiting for you at the exit of the gate, holding a sign with your name on it. In Italy, drivers are not allowed to enter the baggage claim area
– Accommodation: your driver will look for you in the lobby of your hotel.
– Private apartment: meet your driver close to the main door, in the street.

It is totally up to you! Our vehicles have special permits/licenses to circulate almost everywhere (pedestrian areas included).
Obviously, the best way to enjoy historic city centers, is by walking. Remember that being a private service, you are free to decide your own pace with no rush.
Are the entrance fees included in the price?
The entrance fees are not included in the price. If you are interested, your driver will give you all the info to buy the admission tickets on-site.
Keep in mind that normally in Italy, it is mandatory to have shoulders and knees covered to enter religious sites.
We are leaving Italy from the airport in Florence (or Rome) on the same day of the transfer, can we be dropped off directly at Florence (or Rome) Airport?
Yes, you can but please let us know the exact departure flight details. In this way we can schedule your day accordingly, to arrive at the Airport at the perfect time.
