During the Este first century of dominance, Ferrara had a great urban development: the city walls expanded 4 times their original length, art and culture become prominent and renewed.
This is also thanks to Marquis Leonello who created a cultural circle surrounding himself with artists, writers and musicians.
The Church control
In 1598 the glorious dominance of the Este family ended when Alfonso II d’Este died leaving no heirs. Pope Clemente VIII used the opportunity to put Ferrara under the control of the Church-State. A slow decline at an artistic, economic, commercial and demographic level.
The decline
It begins the sad story of the Jewish ghetto establishment. During the Napoleonic domination, many religious orders were suppressed, and a major part of the Este family’s artistic heritage was moved from Ferrara to never return.
In 1860, the papal dominance was defeated and Ferrara united to the Italian Reign.

– Airport: your driver will be waiting for you at the exit of the gate, holding a sign with your name on it. In Italy, drivers are not allowed to enter the baggage claim area
