High above the valley, the town was built on an underground tunnels system (over 1200!) of volcanic rock. Etruscan origins of the city were traced back to the 19th century BC. From 236 BC the Romans took it over and called it Urbs Vetus, from which ‘Orvieto’ derives.
St. Patrick’s Well
Take the 248 stairs down to reach the bottom of this historical well. Built during the 1500s on orders of Pope Clement VII who feared the water supply would be insufficient in case of a siege, the well is about 53 meters (174 ft) deep, surrounded by 72 windows!
Two access stairs allowed mules to independently downward and upward with their vessels. An inscription in Latin mentions ‘What nature stinted for provision, industry has supplied’.
The magnificent Cathedral
